Provincial (Regular) Legion

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION NATIONAL CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In March, 1957, four men from Montague set out for Winnipeg, Manitoba to take part in the Royal Canadian Legion National Curling Championships. It was the first year the tournament was to be held nationally, and the team from Montague had won the right to represent PEI during the provincial play-offs. Those four men were Jerry Jardine, Skip, George MacCannell, AA Joey Fraser, Second, and Doug McGowan, Mate.

“All provinces were represented clear of Newfoundland”, Mr. Fraser said. “They were there the next year.

During the Provincial Play-Offs, Mr. Fraser’s team didn’t lose a game. They defeated teams from Summerside, Alberton and two from Charlottetown. “We were lucky enough we never lost one”, Mr. Fraser said. “Summerside gave us the hardest go for it”.

At the National level, however, PEI didn’t win a game.
