PEI rinks had a good weekend at the 4th Hub City Shootout cashspiel in Moncton. The Suzanne Birt rink, which went undefeated until the final game, lost 4-3 in an extra end to the Sylvie Robichaud team from New Brunswick in the women’s final, while the Robert Campbell team lost 7-6 in an extra end in semi-final play against Chad Stevens of Nova Scotia, who went on to beat Marcel Robichaud of New Brunswick 9-3 in the men’s final. Other members of the Birt team are Shelly Bradley, Robyn MacPhee, and Leslie MacDougall, while Jamie Newson, Tyler MacKenzie, and Robbie Doherty round out the Campbell foursome.
The Rod MacDonald rink made it to the quarter-final round, losing 6-5 in an extra end to Oromocto’s James Grattan team. PEI’s John Desrosiers rink got off to a great start in the event, winning their first three games, but then lost the A qualifier to Robichaud, the B qualifier to MacDonald and the C qualifier to Grattan in this 24 team triple-knockout event, to finish with a 4-3 win-loss record. The Peter Gallant rink, with Peter’s son Brett throwing final stones, finished at 2-3, while the Eddie MacKenzie and Kevin Champion rinks were 1-3.
On the women’s side, the Kathy O’Rourke team finished round robin play with a 3-2 win-loss record, tied for third with three other teams. The third PEI women’s rink in the event, skipped by Donna Butler, did not manage to pick up a win.
